Format & Stages
The Swedish Heritage Run is a stage race covering more than 200 miles. Each stage is roughly 30+ miles and crosses a different chapter of the inland Swedish landscape: deep forests, parish and country roads, paths along rivers and inland lakes, runestone country, open farmland and old pilgrim routes between heritage villages that have stood for centuries.
Each stage stands on its own. One day winds through pine and birch on soft singletrack. The next follows quiet parish and country roads between old farms and red timber houses, or paths tracing the edge of a river or inland lake. Elevation is moderate compared to alpine ultras, but the cumulative distance, the terrain variety, and Nordic weather make it a serious test of endurance and adaptability.
Runners gather each evening at a shared base camp. Days are for movement, evenings for food, stories and recovery. The full course profile and exact route are covered in detail on the Course page.
Daily Rhythm
Each day follows a steady, sustainable rhythm. Mornings start with a short briefing over coffee and a Swedish breakfast (havregrynsgröt and the rest): the day's stage, weather, terrain notes, key checkpoints. Runners depart at staggered times, with sweep support behind the field.
On the trail, stages are primarily self-supported. There are no traditional aid stations — runners carry their own nutrition and water as part of the mandatory kit, with occasional water and refill points at certain locations along the route. Local guides and historians may appear at heritage waypoints to share the story of the place: a runestone, an old pilgrim path, a forgotten chapel.
Evenings at base camp are for recovery. Warm meals — with the ambition of a rotating lineup of local food trucks — recovery support, shared stories under the long Nordic sky. Sleep comes early, because tomorrow does too.

Logistics & Support
A small expert crew handles everything off-trail: transport between stages, medical support, route safety, food, recovery. You run light. The team carries the rest. A single duffle follows you between camps, and a smaller daypack carries what you need on stage.
Detailed logistics, kit lists, packing guidance and travel information are sent to confirmed runners ahead of the event. International runners are welcome. We share arrival recommendations and connect runners travelling from the same regions where possible.
Safety & Medical Support
Safety is built into every layer of the event. Medical professionals are on call throughout the race, with a roaming medic vehicle and trained staff at staffed checkpoints along the route. GPS tracking means we always know where every runner is on course, and weather is monitored continuously so logistics can adapt if needed.
Runners receive a mandatory kit list built for Nordic terrain and shifting conditions. Cutoffs are generous but firm, designed to keep the field safe and the experience sustainable for runners, crew and the landscape.
Eligibility
The Swedish Heritage Run is an expert-level endurance event. Suitable runners typically have prior multi-day or ultra-distance trail experience, are comfortable on technical terrain, and are committed to a respectful, leave-no-trace approach in line with Sweden's Allemansrätten. We assess every applicant individually. See our FAQ or contact us for guidance.
